The "DASH" dash diet plan is a long term, well balanced approach to healthy living that was designed to treat or prevent high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.
"DASH" itself is an abbreviation for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.
It helps you determine if you are overweight, how to lose weight if needed and how to keep it off and much more...
The plan encourages you to consume a variety of healthy foods that are rich in
antioxidants and other nutrients that lower blood pressure including calcium,
magnesium and potassium. It also encourages portion control and the reduction
of sodium which is known to cause high blood pressure.
It is also called a high blood pressure diet which provides a nutritious, balanced diet plan that
is easy to follow, lowers blood pressure and helps to maintain healthy
cholesterol levels.
Studies have shown that following a high blood pressure diet can even lower the risk of heart failure, diabetes, cancer and a variety of other diseases. In addition, by following this plan you will lose weight which is one of its many benefits.
It should be noted that there are different types of hypertension and a high blood pressure diet should only be attempted at the advice of a physician or Registered Dietician.
It is also important to know that hypertension can either be essential or secondary.
Essential hypertension is treated with medication by physicians. Secondary hypertension is a symptom of an underlying problem.
When the cause of the hypertension is corrected, blood pressure will return to normal.
The DASH diet
plan has been recommended by physicians, the National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute, the American Heart Association and the 2010 dietary guidelines for
Americans.
A lot of individuals have opted for other diet
plans, quite often fad diets that promise quick and easy weight loss.
In order for
these diets to deliver as promised, you are required to make drastic changes to
your diet, and in most cases, you won't be able to maintain them for long,
which means that you'll eventually fall right back into the routine of your
unhealthy eating habits.
Following the DASH diet plan as authorized by your
doctor, and doing the right amount of exercise to supplement it will help you
lose weight safely, and keep it off. More importantly, this is a plan that encourages a long and healthy life, free of the perils of heart disease, high
blood pressure, diabetes and more.
